Tinnitus
Ringing in your ears? You’re not alone.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound–such as ringing, buzzing, or humming–without an external source. It can be constant or come and go, and often becomes more noticeable in quiet moments.

What causes tinnitus?

We do not always find the cause, but it can be linked to:
• Hearing loss
• Ear wax build-up
• Noise exposure
• Jaw or neck tension
• Medical conditions or medications

Middle Ear Conditions

Otitis Media, Otosclerosis
Have you or your child ever had ear pain, grommets or just a feeling of fullness in the ears? Sometimes, we have these symptoms if there is a concern with the ear drum, the bones in the middle ear or congestion build up.

Audiologists are trained professionals that can identify the problem and advise what are the necessary steps to take to solve the underlying issue. Ongoing recurring otitis media can lead to permanent hearing loss and early treatment and
intervention is advised for both children and adults.

Vertigo and
balance disorders

Vestibular (balance) problems can be caused by inner ear conditions, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière’s disease, vestibular neuritis, or labyrinthitis, as well as age-related changes, head injuries, medications, or neurological disorders.
Common Symptoms:
Dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea, or difficulty walking.
Early assessment by our interdisciplinary team of vestibular physiotherapists and audiologists can help identify the cause and guide effective treatment. The journey to better balance is getting the right referral, assessment and rehabilitation program.

Dementia and hearing loss

Hearing and Cognitive Health
There is a relationship between hearing and overall cognitive health. The ears receive sound from the world around us, while the brain decodes, and helps us to comprehend what we have heard. If hearing declines, the brain is receiving less information and must work harder. Poor hearing can slow us down mentally and feel draining. Research by Brewster et al., suggests that hearing loss is associated with impaired cognitive performance, increased risk for dementia and poor brain health in older adults.
Identifying and managing hearing changes early may help reduce cognitive load and support your long-term brain health.
This also supports speech understanding as
comprehension of sounds is required
to interpret the information heard.

I have balance concerns, not a hearing issue. Should I test my hearing as well?

The hearing and balance systems are anatomically connected, they share the same fluid and travel as one nerve. Some vestibular and balance conditions are also impacted by hearing issues. When hearing issues are correctly identified, this can either rule out some conditions or indicate treatment and rehabilitation pathways.
