Blocked Ears
A blocked or full sensation in the ear, from ear wax and congestion to middle or inner ear conditions.
It is not uncommon for a blocked ear sensation to occur together with other ear symptoms, such as hearing loss or tinnitus. This page focuses on a blocked ear sensation as the main reason for seeking assessment.
Causes
A blocked ear sensation can have many possible causes. Some of the more common include:
- Ear wax build upExcess ear wax can block the ear canal and cause a blocked or full sensation.
- Temporary ear congestionColds, allergies or ear pressure changes (such as during flying) can create a temporary blocked sensation.
- Middle ear conditionsFluid behind the eardrum or other middle ear conditions can create a blocked sensation.
- Inner ear conditionsLess commonly, some inner ear conditions can create a sensation of fullness or blockage even when the ear canal is clear.
- Jaw joint or muscle problemsProblems affecting the jaw joint or surrounding muscles can sometimes cause a blocked ear sensation.
Assessment & treatment
During your appointment, our audiologists will examine your ears and assess your hearing and middle ear function where appropriate to help determine the cause of your symptoms. Management may include ear wax removal, education, or referral to your GP or an ENT specialist if further assessment is required.
When should I seek urgent assessment?
Seek urgent assessment if you develop a sudden blocked sensation in one ear together with a sudden reduction or loss of hearing. This may also be accompanied by new tinnitus in the same ear. Do not assume it is caused by ear wax. This may be a medical emergency requiring prompt treatment.
