Patient Information

Audiology Patient Guide

General information only — not a substitute for individual medical or audiological advice.

Audiology involves the assessment and management of hearing and ear-related conditions. Our audiologists help people of all ages better understand their hearing and provide personalised solutions to improve communication and quality of life.

Consider booking an assessment if you:

  • Find yourself asking people to repeat themselves
  • Struggle to hear in noisy environments
  • Experience ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • Feel your hearing has changed
  • Have concerns about your child's hearing or speech development
  • Experience dizziness or balance problems

Early assessment can help identify problems before they begin to significantly affect daily life.

No. You can book directly with an audiologist. Some government-funded hearing programs or specialist services may require a referral, and we'll let you know if this applies to your situation.

Your appointment begins with a discussion about your hearing concerns, medical history and lifestyle. We then perform a series of painless hearing tests to understand how well you hear different sounds and speech. We'll explain your results clearly and discuss the most appropriate management options with you.

No, hearing assessments are safe, comfortable and non-invasive. Most appointments take around 45 to 60 minutes.

Not everyone with hearing loss requires hearing aids. If they are appropriate, we'll explain your options, answer your questions and help you choose a solution that suits your hearing needs, lifestyle and budget.

Treatment depends on the cause. Some types of hearing loss are temporary or medically treatable, while others are best managed through hearing rehabilitation, hearing devices or communication strategies. Our role is to help you understand your options and support you every step of the way.

Tinnitus is the perception of sounds such as ringing, buzzing or humming that aren't coming from an external source. Although tinnitus can be frustrating, many people learn to manage it successfully with education, sound therapy and appropriate hearing care.

Not all hearing loss is preventable, but protecting your ears from excessive noise, managing your general health and seeking early assessment if you notice changes can all help support long-term hearing health.
