DEXA Body Composition Scan

We offer body composition scans using a Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry or DEXA machine. This is a specialised piece of medical equipment that utilises very small doses of X-Ray radiation to accurately measure the three different components of body composition - bone, muscle and fat. DEXA scans are suitable for patients of all ages, especially those who want to track their fitness goals with objective data.

In addition, DEXA scans are also great for patients who are looking to track their longevity and muscular health. As we age, the amount of skeletal muscle in our body begins to decline, causing losses in both strength and function. Our DEXA machine is able to give precise measurements of the amount and distribution of your muscle tissue, which can help give a better picture of your health and areas for development.

Standard Scan

Our standard scan includes a brief consultation of your results, focusing mainly on your percentage body fat result.

Comprehensive Scan

Our comprehensive scan includes a longer consultation that covers all aspects of your body composition, including explanations of your results with reference to normalised data for your particular demographic. We go through some strategies you may consider for your health journey and the next steps to achieving your goals.

Why track body composition?

Establish a Clear Baseline

Your first scan creates a reliable starting point for your health or performance journey. It allows training and nutrition to be data-driven, not generic.

Understand Fat & Muscle Distribution

DEXA highlights areas of stubborn fat, muscle imbalances, and health risks linked to excess visceral fat or very low body fat. This insight helps define your ideal body composition — not just a target weight.

Track Progress That Actually Matters

Weight loss alone can hide muscle loss. Muscle gain can mask fat loss. Repeat DEXA scans show fat loss vs muscle gain and how your body responds to training and diet. This is progress you can trust.

Patient Stories

“Highly recommend Simba Health, especially for runners. I saw Nick for ongoing foot pain and, through a combination of dry needling and a tailored exercise program, I was able to return to pain-free running and recently complete a half marathon with no pain at all. Nick took the time to understand my goals and provided practical, effective treatment throughout my recovery. If you’re a runner dealing with an injury or looking to stay healthy and keep running, Simba Health Physiotherapy is a fantastic choice.”

Patient Information

DEXA Scan Patient Guide

General information only — not a substitute for individual medical advice.

  • Avoid overly strenuous exercise within 12 hours of your scan. Excessive training can deplete muscle glycogen and lower the actual muscle mass. Non strenuous exercise is fine before your scan and you may resume all exercise types after the scan.
  • Eat and drink as per normal the day before and maintain adequate hydration by drinking 1-2 glasses of water with each meal and snack.
  • No fluids on the morning of the scan, sips of water are fine.
  • Fast overnight for a minimum of 10 hours.
  • No chewing gum or smoking prior to the scan.
  • Ensure adequate carbohydrate intake the day before your scan. A recent low carbohydrate intake can increase the chances of depleted muscle glycogen stores which can skew results by measuring less muscle mass than you really have.
  • Make sure to empty your bladder before your scan.
  • No strenuous exercise the day before (preferably) and on the day of the scan. Excessive training sessions prior to the day of the scan and on the day of the scan, can deplete muscle glycogen and lower the actual muscle mass. Non strenuous exercise is fine before your scan and you may resume all exercise types after the scan.
  • Eat and drink as per normal the day of the scan.
  • You will need to fast for a minimum of 4 hours (no food or drink). Avoid beverages with caffeine or other stimulants on the morning of your scan.
  • Prior to fasting - maintain adequate hydration. 1-2 glasses of water with each meal and snack.
  • No chewing gum or smoking prior to your scan
  • Ensure adequate carbohydrate intake the day before and on the morning of your scan.
  • Wear comfortable loose clothing. Preferably with NO metal zippers, buttons, metal hooks/clips/wires, metallic jeans or compression sports clothing.
  • Remove ALL jewellery including body piercings (if possible)
  • Remember to fast prior to your scan. No food or fluids.
  • You will have an opportunity to ask questions before you begin your scan.
  • The whole body scan takes 5-7 minutes while lying flat and still as possible on the scanning bed.

DEXA Scans

Frequently Asked Questions

General information only — not a substitute for individual medical advice.

Yes. DEXA scans use an extremely low radiation dose — less than 0.1 microsieverts (µSv). For comparison, this is less than 1/80th of the natural background radiation you receive daily, and far lower than most medical imaging procedures. There are no known health risks.

Arrive in lightweight clothing without metal and remove any jewellery. Ideally come fasted or after a light, consistent meal, limit water intake to ≤250 mL immediately beforehand, and avoid a heavy training session on the day. Let us know before your appointment if you are pregnant, or if you have had contrast or nuclear medicine imaging in the past week.

Consistency is key. To reduce biological variability: scan at the same time of day, eat the same meal at the same time before each scan, keep exercise consistent (or avoid it before scanning), and limit water intake to ≤250 mL immediately beforehand. This ensures your results reflect real change — not day-to-day fluctuations.

Wear clothing without metal (no zips, buckles, or underwires). Lightweight exercise clothing works best. Metal implants are fine, though they may slightly elevate bone density readings.

No referral is required for a DEXA body composition scan.

No. Body composition DEXA scans are not currently covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

The scan provides a useful estimate of total body bone mineral density, but it cannot be used diagnostically. For diagnostic bone density assessment, a doctor's referral and a specific clinical DEXA scan are required.
