Patient Information
Podiatry Patient Guide
General information only — not a substitute for individual medical or physiotherapy advice.
Podiatrists are university-trained professionals who specialise in the foot and lower limb.
Yes, Podiatrists regularly assist patients with routine/ongoing skin and nail care, including cracked heels, cutting/filing of nails and removing of corns/calluses.
A Biomechanical Assessment examines the way you walk or run. At Simba Health, our Podiatrists will do a thorough assessment on how your feet, ankles, knees and hips work while in a walking or running motion. This will enable us to check for potential abnormalities and possible causes of the pain you may be experiencing.
Our Podiatrists will listen carefully to understand your concerns and work to identify the possible cause of your pain and discomfort. To establish an accurate diagnosis, a thorough examination will be conducted. You will be informed of the findings and given the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your condition. If the podiatrist determines that podiatry treatment is suitable for managing your condition, a treatment and/or rehabilitation plan will be recommended to restore your health quickly and effectively.
Not necessarily. Orthotics can help some people, but they're only one of many treatment options. Your podiatrist will only recommend orthotics if they're likely to benefit your specific condition and goals.
Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include:
- Shockwave therapy (where appropriate)
- Dry needling and electroacupuncture
- Footwear advice
- Exercise-based rehabilitation
- Running coaching
- Orthotic therapy
- Nail and skin care
- Ingrown toenail management
- Education and self-management strategies
Our focus is to reduce pain, improve function, and help you stay active.
Yes. Podiatrists commonly assess and manage running-related injuries, overuse injuries, and conditions affecting the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. We also provide advice on footwear, running technique, training loads, and returning safely to sport after injury.
Diabetes can damage the nerves and blood supply to your feet, often without you noticing. Over time this may cause irreversible loss of feeling, poor circulation, balance problems, foot deformities, and delayed wound healing. If poorly managed, diabetic feet can become severely infected, potentially leading to foot or leg amputation, or even death. Regular foot checks by a Podiatrist are one of the simplest and most effective ways to detect and prevent problems before they become serious.
Yes. Children may benefit from a podiatry assessment if they have foot pain, walk differently to other children, trip or fall often, or if you have any concerns about how their feet or legs are developing.
There isn't one “perfect” shoe for everyone. The best footwear depends on your feet, your daily activities, and your individual needs. Our podiatrists can help you choose shoes that give you the right support, comfort, and function for your situation.
Many foot problems can be reduced with a few simple habits: wearing appropriate footwear, keeping the muscles in your feet and legs strong and flexible, looking after your nails and skin, and seeing a podiatrist early if something feels off. Catching small issues early is often easier and faster to treat than waiting until they get worse.
Please seek prompt medical care if you notice:
- A foot that is red, hot, swollen, and painful
- An open wound that isn't healing
- Sudden swelling after a significant injury
- A suspected broken bone
- Your foot or ankle suddenly giving way, causing repeated falls
- A wound that becomes red, swollen, or painful, especially if you have diabetes
- Sudden loss of feeling, or a change in colour or warmth, in your foot
- Cramping or pain in your legs after walking only a short distance
If you experience any of these, please see a doctor promptly or visit your nearest emergency department. In a medical emergency, always call 000.
Keep your feet healthy.
