Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo — brief spinning triggered by specific head movements.

(02) 9188 0544Initial assessment: $210

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals become dislodged from their normal position in the inner ear and move into one of the semicircular canals. As the head changes position, these crystals stimulate the balance sensors incorrectly, causing brief episodes of spinning dizziness.

Assessment & treatment

A vestibular physiotherapist can accurately determine which canal is affected and perform specialised repositioning manoeuvres to move the displaced crystals out of the semicircular canal. Most people experience significant improvement after one or two treatments.

If your symptoms are not consistent with BPPV or do not resolve as expected, your physiotherapist may recommend further assessment by your GP or an ENT specialist.
