Hip pain can affect people of all ages and may develop following a sporting injury, repetitive activity or gradually over time due to age-related changes. Because pain around the hip can originate from several different structures, a thorough assessment is essential to determine the source of your symptoms and guide the most effective treatment.

Common causes

  • Gluteal TendinopathyIrritation of the gluteal tendons, commonly causing pain on the outside of the hip, particularly when walking, climbing stairs or lying on your side.
  • Hip OsteoarthritisWear and tear of the hip joint that can lead to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.
  • Hip BursitisInflammation of the bursa around the hip, often causing pain on the outside of the hip with walking or lying on the affected side.
  • Hip Impingement (FAI)Abnormal contact between the hip bones that may cause groin pain, stiffness and reduced movement.
  • Labral TearsInjury to the cartilage surrounding the hip socket, which can cause pain, clicking or feelings of instability.
  • Muscle StrainsInjury to the muscles around the hip or groin.
  • Hamstring TendinopathyIrritation of the hamstring tendon where it attaches near the sitting bone, causing pain during sitting, running or bending.
  • Hip Flexor TendinopathyIrritation of the front hip muscles or tendons, often associated with running, kicking and repetitive lifting.
  • Referred PainSometimes hip pain originates from the lower back or pelvis rather than the hip joint itself.
