Knee Pain
Sudden or gradual knee pain from patellofemoral pain, tendinopathy, meniscus and ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and more.
Knee pain is one of the most common conditions we treat and can affect people of all ages and activity levels. It may develop suddenly following an injury or gradually over time due to sport, work, exercise or everyday activities. Because many conditions can cause similar symptoms, a thorough assessment is essential to identify the source of your pain and guide the most effective treatment.
Common causes
- Patellofemoral Pain (Runner's Knee)Diffuse pain around the front of the knee, often aggravated by running, stairs, squatting or prolonged sitting.
- Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee)An overuse injury affecting the tendon below the kneecap, commonly seen in running and jumping sports.
- Meniscus InjuriesDamage to the “C” shaped fibrocartilage shock absorber on the inside of the knee that can cause pain, swelling, clicking or locking.
- Knee Ligament InjuriesSprains or tears of the ACL, MCL, PCL or LCL that may occur during sport or after sudden twisting or high impact.
- OsteoarthritisWear and tear of the knee joint.
- Iliotibial Band (ITB) SyndromePain on the outside of the knee caused by irritation of the iliotibial band, commonly affecting runners and cyclists.
- Prepatellar BursitisInflammation of the fluid-filled sac (bursa) at the front of the knee.
- Osgood-Schlatter DiseaseA common cause of knee pain in growing children and adolescents, affecting the area just below the kneecap.
- Patella Dislocation & SubluxationOccurs when the kneecap partially or completely moves out of its normal position, often causing pain, instability and swelling.
- Chondromalacia PatellaeSoftening and irritation of the cartilage beneath the kneecap, which can cause a clicking sensation during movement.
- Referred PainSometimes knee pain originates from the hip, lower back or surrounding muscles rather than the knee itself.
