Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)
Ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in one or both ears that others cannot hear.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when there is no external source present. It is commonly experienced as ringing, buzzing or humming, and can be constant or intermittent.
In most cases, tinnitus is not a sign of a serious medical condition. If there are signs that suggest an underlying ear or medical condition, a referral to your GP or an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist may be appropriate.
Causes
- Wax blockage
- Middle or inner ear conditions
- Muscle tension, such as neck or jaw (TMJ) tension
- Hearing loss
- Exposure to loud noise without hearing protection
- Side effects from certain medications
Common symptoms
- Constant or intermittent ringing in the ears
- High-pitched tone in one ear
- Noise that is louder in quiet environments
Assessment & treatment
As part of your assessment, we may ask you to complete a clinically appropriate standardised questionnaire. These questionnaires are medically or psychologically validated tools that help our audiologist objectively assess the impact and severity of your tinnitus symptoms.
Assessment may include:
- 1High frequency diagnostic hearing test
- 2Tympanometry
- 3Speech audiometry
- 4Acoustic reflex testing
- 5Pitch-matching assessment
