Wrist pain can interfere with work, sport and everyday activities such as lifting, typing and gripping. It may develop suddenly following a fall or injury, or gradually due to repetitive movements and overuse. Because many wrist conditions can present with similar symptoms, a thorough assessment is essential to identify the source of your pain and guide the most effective treatment.

Common causes

  • Wrist SprainsStretching or tearing of the wrist ligaments following a fall, twist or impact.
  • Tendon Injuries (Tendinopathy)Irritation of the wrist tendons caused by repetitive movements, gripping or overuse.
  • De Quervain's TenosynovitisIrritation of the tendons at the base of the thumb, commonly causing pain with gripping or lifting.
  • Carpal Tunnel SyndromeCompression of the median nerve at the wrist, often causing pain, numbness and tingling into the thumb and fingers.
  • Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) InjuriesDamage to the cartilage and ligaments on the little finger side of the wrist, commonly causing pain with twisting or weight-bearing.
  • Wrist FracturesFollowing a fall or direct impact.
  • Thumb OsteoarthritisWear and tear at the base of the thumb that can make gripping and pinching painful.
  • Ganglion CystsFluid-filled lumps around the wrist that may cause discomfort or restrict movement.
  • Referred PainSometimes wrist pain originates from the neck, elbow or surrounding structures rather than the wrist itself.
